But why? This is a golden opportunity to be “Standing on the shoulders of giants”? Meaning, we can use stuff that other people have built, so we don’t have to redo the hard work. When developing something in ruby you can always write everything from scratch. Long story short: we want to keep everything up to date, mainly for security (better safe than sorry!) but sometimes also to access new features that have just been released. Let’s take a closer look at how they work together and how we interact with them. Then, since we are using ruby and gems we need bundle to keep track of all of them for a specific project. We use rbenv to install new versions of ruby on your computer (or run many different versions in parallel). So we need brew to be able to install rbenv. bundle - a package manager for ruby to keep track of your gems (for a specific project).gem - confusing name for a ruby package.ruby - the program language of our choice today.brew - package manager for macOS and linux code. But you will soon learn how complicated it would be if we didn’t have brew, rbenv and bundler) To summarize (If you think this sounds very complicated, you are not alone. It is called Bundler, or bundle for short. It doesn’t stop there… Very much like we use brew to help us keep track of different macOS/linux packages ruby itself also has a package manager for its gems. To complicate things further, these ruby packages are not called packages. This is great since it allows you as a developer to reuse other developer’s code and not reinvent the wheel every time you build something. Ruby and it’s environment also provides a subset of packages that is open source and distributed. And it allows you to install and run multiple versions of ruby at the same time. It makes it easier to install new versions of ruby. It helps you to contain ruby and gems to one location on your computer. You could survive by using the ruby version that comes with macOS and update it as soon as new versions come out, but using rbenv has many advantages. Ruby Version Manager, more commonly known as RVM or rbenv is exactly what it sounds like: a version manager for ruby. Most pressingly, it’s complicated to install and update packages yourself. You could run ruby without it, in fact - ruby comes preinstalled with macOS. One of the most used package managers for macOS and linux is called Homebrew, or brew for short. “A package manager or package-management system is a collection of software tools that automates the process of installing, upgrading, configuring, and removing computer programs for a computer’s operating system in a consistent manner.” How would Wikipedia describe a package manager? To help us, we need a package manager… Brew - our package manager of choice Because we are power users (wieehoo! Right?). Most users of macOS are happy with applications they can download from the internet or purchase via the App Store. They are of interest if you are a developer, or so called “power user”. A normal user rarely comes in contact with these applications/ packages since they are mainly acessible via the terminal or runs in the background. Its job is to keep track of the latest versions of these packages and distribute it in a more controlled fashion. That is the purpose of a “package manager”. And because they are open source and freely distributed, as counterintuitive as it might sound, we need to centralize it somehow. They either come pre installed or can be installed through something called a “package manager”. Some applications are called packages or libraries (libs). Unix and Linux are open source and developed by thousands of developers. Open source means that anyone can freely review the code, make changes or write new applications. And they all have two things in common, they are composed of several components packed together - open sourced and distributed. Without going into too much detail it is based on another, more primitive operating system called Unix. Your computer runs an operating system called macOS. We will start with a brief history lesson followed by further explanation of included parts. An explanation to the intricate relationships between your mac computer and required packages to run ruby in an optimal way. This works ok but definitely not if you're still frequently iterating on your shared library. You could publish it to NPM and install it like any other dependency. Say you create a common library and you want to use it in N > 1 of your other projects. Sharing code between JavaScript & TypeScript projects has always been more trouble than it should be. If you are using an older version, you should refer to the README to know which version of the library you should install.□ Improving Code Sharing with Yarn Workspaces Published The latest version of a library is typically compatible with the latest version of React Native. Does it work with my app version of React Native? If the library you would like to use is not currently listed there, refer to the README for the library to learn more. React Native Directory allows you to filter by platform compatibility, such as iOS, Android, Web, and Windows. Does it work for the platforms that my app supports? You can remove packages using npm uninstall if it turns out that it does not work in React Native. You will gain a sense for this over time, but until then the easiest way to find out is to try it yourself. Other libraries like lodash use only JavaScript language features and work in any environment. Examples include react-select which is built for the web and specifically targets react-dom, and rimraf which is built for Node.js and interacts with your computer file system. Usually libraries built specifically for other platforms will not work with React Native. Determining Library Compatibility Does it work with React Native? React Native is one of many JavaScript programming environments, including Node.js, web browsers, Electron, and more, and npm includes libraries that work for all of these environments. The npm registry is the definitive source for JavaScript libraries, but the libraries that it lists may not all be compatible with React Native. Libraries built by Expo are all written in TypeScript and support iOS, Android, and react-native-web wherever possible.Īfter React Native Directory, the npm registry is the next best place if you can't find a library specifically for React Native on the directory. Many of the libraries in this organization were once React Native Core Components and APIs. They often support iOS, tvOS, Android, Windows, but this varies across projects. Libraries built by the React Native Community are driven by volunteers and individuals at companies that depend on React Native. Many of the libraries you will find on the directory are from React Native Community or Expo. This is the first place to look for a library for your React Native app. React Native Directory is a searchable database of libraries built specifically for React Native. Let's try this with react-native-webview: To install a library in your project, navigate to your project directory in your terminal and run the installation command. □ The terms "library" and "package" are used interchangeably in the JavaScript community. We will assume npm for the rest of this guide for simplicity of explanation. Some developers prefer to use Yarn Classic for slightly faster install times and additional advanced features like Workspaces. If you have Node.js installed on your computer then you already have the npm CLI installed. React Native libraries are typically installed from the npm registry using a Node.js package manager such as npm CLI or Yarn Classic. If the Core Components and APIs don't have what you are looking for, you may be able to find and install a library from the community to add the functionality to your app. React Native has a community of thousands of developers. You're not limited to the components and APIs bundled with React Native. React Native provides a set of built-in Core Components and APIs ready to use in your app. The next thing to look at when your Vibe isn’t starting would be the starter itself. Suspect the alternator if the battery light stays on after charging your car’s battery or jumping it. If the battery is dead, it either isn’t storing enough voltage or it isn’t charging enough.Ī bad alternator can cause your battery to drain to the point it can’t turn your Vibe over. If the battery is in the vehicle and it’s under 12 volts, it’s likely bad unless your car has been sitting for a while or something is drawing current. You can take your battery to the local parts store or even Walmart and have it tested to see if it still holds a charge.Īlternatively, you can test the battery yourself with a voltage meter. Your Vibe needs 12+ volts to start its engine. Low Battery VoltageĪs your car’s battery ages, its cranking amperage decreases, leaving it with a diminished capacity for starting the engine. Here’s a good article from Napa on properly cleaning a battery terminal. If there appears to be green or white on them or the terminals, cleaning them may be what your Vibe needs to get back on the road. If they are loose or corroded, it acts as a barrier that can keep the starter from getting the voltage it needs to crank the engine. Start by taking a look at the battery posts. Battery Cables If you have a battery post that looks like this, it may be keeping your Vibe from starting. Here are the most common reasons why the Pontiac Vibe won’t start when the engine is not cranking. This article is written with the assumption that you are looking for a way to get your Pontiac Vibe started now, and is meant to provide you with practical advice to help aid in the diagnosis.įirst, is your Vibe cranking over at all (the engine spins when you turn the key?
